Kyoto districts: Higashiyama, Rakuchu, Kitayama, and Arashiyama
Read Kyoto by district: Higashiyama temples, Shijo-Kawaramachi commerce, Kyoto Station, Sakyo universities, Kitayama cafes, and Arashiyama nature.
Kyoto City covers about 827 square kilometers, but the visitor core is narrow. Kyoto Station to Kinkakuji is under 7 km in a straight line, and the city becomes easier once you separate temple belts, commercial streets, universities, and suburban nature.
Higashiyama
Higashiyama is the densest temple-and-shrine belt. Kiyomizudera costs about ¥400, Kodaiji about ¥600, Yasaka Shrine is free, and Nanzenji’s garden costs about ¥600. Walking the line can become a 4 km route along the mountain foot.
Gion sits west of Yasaka Shrine. Hanamikoji is a geiko and maiko work area with teahouses and restaurants, not a street-photo set. Do not block people walking to evening appointments.
Rakuchu and Kawaramachi
Shijo-Kawaramachi is Kyoto’s largest commercial center. Takashimaya, Fujii Daimaru, Shinkyogoku, Teramachi, banks, offices, and small restaurants all sit within a short walk.
Nishiki Market is about 390 meters long and has roughly 130 shops. It sells Kyoto vegetables, pickles, dried fish, tofu, sweets, and tea. Many shops close around 17:00 to 18:00, and 11:00 to 14:00 is the crowded tourist window.
Kyoto Station
Kyoto Station connects Shinkansen, JR, Kintetsu, and the subway, but it is south of the main sightseeing core. Kyoto Tower is 131 meters tall, and the observation deck is around ¥900.
The station building has Isetan and Ramen Koji with about 10 ramen shops. It is useful on arrival day, but reaching Higashiyama by bus can take 15 to 20 minutes and Kinkakuji 40 to 50 minutes.
Sakyo and Kitayama
Sakyo is tied to Kyoto University and a quieter residential rhythm. Kitayama has the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, the Garden of Fine Arts, cafes, and wider streets than the old tourist core.
Eizan Railway leaves Demachiyanagi for Kurama and Kibune. In autumn, the maple tunnel is popular, and the hike from Kuramadera to Kifune Shrine takes about 1.5 hours.
Arashiyama and Sagano
Arashiyama is on Kyoto’s western edge. JR Sagano Line reaches Saga-Arashiyama Station from Kyoto Station in about 16 minutes.
The main points are the free bamboo grove, Tenryuji garden at about ¥500, and Togetsukyo Bridge. The Sagano Scenic Railway costs about ¥880 one way and takes about 25 minutes along the Hozu River valley; autumn seats should be reserved early.
